There are three things you can put at the boundary. Storage holds energy and gives it back later, at a round-trip cost. Dispatchable compute takes surplus and turns it into work you wanted done anyway, at full value, but cannot give it back. Thermal offtake does the same into heat. The instinct is to reach for storage, because storage is what a battery is for. But storage is the instrument for a timing problem, and if your failure is that the core makes power nothing can absorb, storage only helps until it is full. The subtler point is about order. Storage must have first claim on surplus, because it is the only element that preserves the option to use the energy later. Let a sink take the surplus first and the storage never charges — it sits there, paid for, empty, and the meter reads exactly as though you had not bought it.
