Bounding what you cannot measure

The claim omits the cost of reading the answer out of the machine: 2,592 values per trajectory. For the advantage of 10^11 to survive, what must reading ONE of those values cost?

Bound an omitted term by inverting the claim it was left out of, and judge the claim by whether that bound is physically reachable.

01Challenge

A paper reports an energy advantage of more than ten billion to one. Both of its numbers are its own and both are honest. The machine does not exist yet, so you cannot measure the term it leaves out. Decide whether the claim can hold anyway.

02Model

Lesson four tested an omitted term by computing it. That works when you can. Here you cannot: the machine is a proposal, and this review did not locate a readout measurement from one to put in the gap. The move that still works is to invert the claim. An advantage is a ratio, so fixing the ratio you were promised and solving for the missing term gives the largest that term is allowed to be. Then you ask a question that has a physical answer: is that size reachable? Energies have a floor. Reading one bit costs at least kT ln 2, about 2.9 zeptojoules at room temperature, and no wire, amplifier or converter has ever come close to it. A budget that lands near one Landauer floor is therefore not a hardware target anybody could aim at; it is the claim quietly asserting that one of its own steps is free. The useful part is that this needs no device and no agreement about one, which means it survives exactly the situation where a measurement cannot be had.

03Guided practice

Invert the advantage to get the per-read budget, then divide it by the Landauer floor to put it in units that need no agreement, and read the verdict off in those units rather than in joules.

PASS WHEN You bounded a quantity without measuring it, and the bound decided the claim. 1.18 kT ln 2 per value is not a specification an engineer could meet; it is the claim asserting that readout is free.

If your run fails, check:

Start from the forward direction and solve it for e_read: advantage = baseline / (dynamics + reads * e_read).
The budget is a TOTAL until you divide by the number of reads. If the round trip is off by a factor of millions, that is the missing division.
If the round trip returns more than you asked for, check the sign: the dynamics term is subtracted from the allowance, not added to it.

When an omitted term cannot be measured, invert the claim and solve for the largest it is allowed to be.
Express the bound in units of the relevant physical floor rather than in joules, and then it needs no device and no agreement about one.
A bound that lands near one Landauer floor is not an engineering target; it is a claim that the step is free.
An advantage quoted between two dynamics figures has a third term, and the third term is usually the one that decides it.

06Mastery & project

State the general procedure for judging a claim whose omitted term cannot be measured, and say what makes the resulting bound convincing to someone who disagrees with you about the hardware.

Take a published speedup or efficiency ratio in any field, identify a step it does not charge for, and invert the ratio to bound that step. Say whether the bound is reachable, and name the physical floor you compared it against.
