What drone tower inspection is worth
Drive the tower base, the structure mix and the vendor-quoted saving, and read the national market against US cellular opex.

The first four grades follow the paper's convention. Verified means independently replicated or drawn from a regulator, standards body or peer-reviewed source. Reported means a named analyst house or operator stated it without independent confirmation. Self-published means the number comes from a party selling the thing being measured. Modelled means it was computed rather than observed. Not published is this console's own marker, not the paper's, for an input the sources do not give at all, so the setting is yours.
Drive the model
WIA's 2025 report, modelled by iGR, gives 158,500 purpose-built towers [4]. The slider runs to 200,000 so the base can be pushed well above the published figure. It stops short of WIA's 254,850 macrocells, which is a different quantity counted a different way, and treating one as the other is the registry error this review is about. The national value rises with this input, so the top of the slider is the strongest case these sources allow.
ANSI/TIA-222 recommends major structural inspection every three years for guyed masts and every five years for self-supporting structures, and TIA's TR-14 committee states this is a recommendation rather than a mandate [7]. The US mix is not published [7][42]. This slider is the whole of the paper's 32,000 to 53,000 bracket: 0% gives 31,700 inspections a year on the default base, 100% gives 52,833. It opens at 100%, the assumption behind the paper's upper bound.
Providers quote $350-600 per tower against $800-1,500 for a climbing crew, and every figure traces to a company selling the service [8]. $675 is the midpoint difference, a 59% saving. The slider ends are the full spread of the quoted ranges, $200 (a 25% saving) to $1,150 (77%) [8][42]. A drone pass performs no torque checks, connector work, grounding continuity testing or hands-on remediation, so the residual crew visit is not priced here [8].

Every figure here is the author's arithmetic [42] on a tower count that is itself an iGR model for WIA [4], run at an interval TIA states is a recommendation rather than a mandate [7] and across a guyed to self-supporting mix nobody publishes, so the output is a modelled figure resting on a modelled base.
Push every slider to the setting that favours drones and the national value of structural inspection stays in the tens of millions, a fraction of a percent of US cellular opex. The tower base underneath is itself modelled.
Cost per site
Divide the same $54.7bn of opex by macrocells or by every node WIA counts and cost per site runs from about $43,000 to about $215,000, and WIA does not publish the split.
Drive the denominator
WIA's 254,850 macrocells [4]. The floor is WIA's 158,500 purpose-built towers [4] and the ceiling is CTIA's 447,605 total US cell sites at year-end 2024 [6]. CTIA's total and WIA's macrocell count differ by 1.76x, and neither body publishes definitions that reconcile them [4][6][42].
WIA's 198,100 outdoor small cells [4]. CTIA separately counts 166,264 small cells at year-end 2024, up 6% from 156,787 [6]. Drag to zero to see the bracket when the opex is charged only to macro sites and indoor nodes.
WIA's 830,350 indoor small cell nodes [4]. This single count exceeds CTIA's entire site total of 447,605 [4][6]. It is the largest term in the low end of the bracket, so dragging it to zero shows how much of the $42,600 per node figure rests on it.
WIA does not publish how opex splits across site types [4]. 100% reproduces the paper's $214,600 per macrocell. The flat-allocation share, 19.9% at WIA's published counts, reproduces $42,600 per node and is marked on the slider track.
