How small can the brain be?

Every other machine in this series needed a brain to plan its move. But the soft hand already does most of the work in its body — so what is left for the brain to do? Here a neural network sets just one thing, how firmly to close, for whatever it is handed. Watch it grip. Then guess how big a brain that is — remembering the body already did the hard part.

Provenance. The policy is a 1→8→8→1 multilayer perceptron — 97 weights, the smallest brain in the series — behaviour-cloned from the soft core: object size in, tendon actuation out. It only has to decide how firmly to close, because the compliant body already shapes the grasp to the object. That is the payoff of morphological computation: the more the body computes, the less the brain must. Released open; the demonstration is ours.
